Amazon Leads NFL Youth Movement

One of the biggest hopes for the NFL and other leagues putting games on streaming services is capturing a younger viewership. Well, about a third of the way through Amazon’s Thursday Night Football schedule this year, it seems to be accomplishing that goal. A reported 24% of TNF viewers are in the 18-to-34 age range, vs. 14% of the NFL linear TV audience.

(Amazon Prime Video data via L.A. Times)

  • Thursday Night Football viewership among 18-to-34 year-olds is up 67% year-over-year.

  • Overall Thursday Night Football has risen 11% year-over-year despite the move to Amazon Prime Video — though it would seem unlikely that pace can continue with recent clunker matchups (the Colts beat the Broncos 12-9 in overtime in week five, while the Commanders knocked off the Bears 12-7 in week six).

  • The next four weeks of TNF games feature at least one team that currently has a .500 or worse record, though those matchups also include popular franchises like the Packers, Eagles and Buccaneers.
