TV Report: Top Networks, Shows & Binge Trends, Mar. 30 - Apr. 2

As more and more Americans shelter in place during the coronavirus pandemic, what networks and shows are they turning to for comfort? Here’s a quick snapshot for Monday, March 30 through Thursday, April 2.

Top Networks by TV Ad Impressions

CBS takes the lead for TV ad impressions, but Fox News is on its heels, and two other cable news networks are also in the top ten: CNN and MSNBC. Unsurprisingly, HGTV and Food Network are on the list, in sixth and ninth place respectively, and Univision rounds things out at No. 10.

With a whopping 1.08 billion TV ad impressions, Friends takes first place. Reruns of the beloved sitcom ran across three networks this week (TBS, Nick@Nite and MyNetworkTV), with the majority of impressions occurring on TBS (573.8 million), followed by Nick@Nite (506.2 million). Four news programs make the top ten list as well, with Fox News’ America’s Newsroom in second place for impressions — with a substantially lower estimated spend than all the others.

Most-Binged Time-Shifted Shows

Topping the list of shows based on minutes binged (as a percent of all binged shows that Inscape measured) is police procedural Criminal Minds, followed by fan-favorite The Office. Both of these frequently air in syndicated marathons, making them perfect for DVRing for future binge-watching. Also notable are the two kids’ shows: Peppa Pig and Puppy Dog Pals. With schools closed and parents doing double duty working from home and trying to keep their children entertained, it makes sense that these appear in the top ten.
